DELHI CM KEJRIWAL CALLED IN FOR AN INVESTIGATION BY THE CBI IN EXCISE POLICY CASE

It was in 2020, a request for a new liquor policy was put forward by the Delhi government – the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). It all started at that moment and even now, the chaos it caused is not settled.

Since the day V. K. Saxena signed for CBI investigation on the new Excise policy 2021-22, more than 10 were arrested and more than 20 are accused of being part of the scam. And now we see the Delhi CM, Arvind Kejriwal being called in for an interrogation.

The Central Buro of Investigation (CBI), who were appointed to have a deeper look into Delhi’s New Liquor Policy, called AAP chief, Arvind Kejriwal for an investigation that is scheduled for 11 am on 16 April 2023.

What is the Delhi Excise Policy Case

This case is about the allegations made against the Delhi government regarding their request and approval for a new liquor policy during 2020-22. The policy was made in a way that the changes made will benefit the private traders and might bring so much loss to the government.

Despite knowing the loss, it might face, the Delhi ruling party – AAP had put so much effort into bringing this policy into action. And the case’s allegations believe that AAP had received an illicit payment from the beneficiary private players.

When and where did this scam start

Till 2020, it was the state government that ran more than 50% of the liquor shops in Delhi. But after Covid, in 2020, experts sought a change in the liquor policies of the state. In the new policy, it was mentioned about the privatization of the state’s liquor shops.

In 2021, on February 5, the Delhi Cabinet sat to discuss the idea of the new liquor policy. A committee of three – Manish Sisodia, Kailash Gahlot, and Satyendra Jain, was appointed to take things forward for the new policy.

And finally, on April 15, 2021, the new liquor policy was given a green signal by the government. In 2021 June, Delhi’s AAP government decided to privatize all the state’s liquor shops.

Delhi was divided into 32 zones; provisions were made stating that 27 liquor shops for each zone. As claimed by AAP, the made decision was said to bring 9,500 crore profit to the government.

After that, numerous meetings and discussions were set up to talk about the matter, and finally, on November 5 of 2021, it was decided that private liquor traders can start selling under the eye of the Delhi Development Authority. On November 17, the new liquor policy was accepted and put into action.
