Heavy Rains Flood Hyderabad, Leave Two Dead
Locals Warned GHMC About Dangerous Wire Earlier
Residents Warned GHMC Before Fatal Electrical Incident
Heavy rains lash Hyderabad: two dead, slab collapse, 76 trees uprooted and widespread flooding
Heavy rains battered Hyderabad on Tuesday, June 9, leaving two people dead, including a 15-year-old boy who was electrocuted in Bandlaguda, and causing structural damage, power outages and severe urban flooding across major junctions.
Electrocution deaths after live wire falls
Locals said sparks were seen from an electrical wire near the Royal Sea Hotel in Bandlaguda two days before the tragedy and that they had reported the hazard to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), but no remedial action was taken. The wire reportedly fell during the downpour, electrocuting 15-year-old Jaffar, who died on the spot. Another person was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to injuries, residents said.
“It is due to GHMC’s negligence that two people died here today,” a local told reporters as family members wept and carried a body into an autorickshaw to transport it to hospital.
Heritage slab collapse damages power lines
In the Old City’s Chhata Bazar area, a portion of the Old Heritage Kaman collapsed onto nearby electrical lines during the heavy rains, sparking short circuits and further power disruption. Moghalpura Electricity Department teams were alerted and the power supply to the affected area was temporarily shut off as a safety measure while crews assessed damage and began restoration work.
Hyderabad Traffic Police said traffic was diverted from Chhata Bazar towards Madina to ensure public safety and to facilitate repair operations. Commuters filmed vehicles wading through knee-deep water at several major junctions as waterlogged roads snarled movement across the city.
Widespread uprooted trees and urban disruption
The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) reported complaints of uprooted trees at 76 different locations across the city. Fallen trees blocked roads, damaged parked vehicles and added to the power outage list where lines were brought down. Municipal teams and civic agencies were deployed on Tuesday night to clear debris, remove tree falls and restore priority roadways.
Flooding impact and public advisories
Social media posts from residents highlighted stranded motorists, submerged two-wheelers and localised sewage overflows in low-lying neighbourhoods. Authorities urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel, stay away from fallen power lines and report emergencies through designated helplines.
What officials are doing
- GHMC and HYDRAA teams were mobilised for clearing debris, removing fallen trees and coordinating relief.
- Electricity department crews isolated damaged circuits and worked on restoring supply to critical areas after safety checks.
- Traffic police issued diversions and urged motorists to follow alternate routes until waters recede.
Calls for accountability
Residents and local leaders demanded a probe into delays in addressing reported live-wire hazards and faster municipal response to infrastructure vulnerabilities exposed by the rains. Civic activists urged improved maintenance of aged heritage structures and regular tree-trimming and storm-preparedness measures to reduce future casualties.
What to watch next
- Official confirmations on identities and cause-of-death reports.
- Timelines for power restoration in affected wards.
