Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding and School Closures in Kerala
Heavy rainfall has lashed several parts of Kerala in recent days, leading to flooding in various areas and the closure of educational institutions. The downpour has prompted district administrations to take precautionary measures and open relief camps for affected residents.
In response to the challenging conditions caused by the incessant rains, authorities declared a holiday for educational institutions in several regions. Kottayam, Vaikom, and Changanassery taluks, where 17 relief camps have been set up to provide shelter for approximately 246 people due to flooding, were among the areas affected by the school closures.
In Alappuzha, Cherthala, and Chengannur taluks, where relief camps were also in operation, educational institutions were likewise given a holiday to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather forecast indicating the possibility of light rainfall in specific districts of Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam. Despite the reduced rainfall prediction, the IMD maintained a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha, implying the likelihood of heavy rainfall ranging between 6 cm and 11 cm.
Over the past three to four days, Kerala has experienced widespread rainfall, resulting in several incidents such as tree uprooting, waterlogging, and compound wall collapses. Fortunately, no major casualties have been reported across the state thus far.
One of the significant challenges posed by the heavy downpour was the submersion of vast areas of paddy fields in Edathua, a small village located in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district. These fields are vital for agricultural activities in the region, and their flooding has raised concerns among local farmers.
The Disaster Management Authority has issued advisories to residents living in elevated areas, urging them to exercise caution due to the persistent rain. The continuous downpour has increased the risk of landslides and other weather-related incidents in hilly regions, necessitating vigilance among those residing there.
