Islamabad: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been moved back to Adiala Jail after undergoing a medical examination following concerns about his health in custody.
Khan, 73, was taken from prison during the early hours of Friday to a medical facility in Islamabad under heavy security. The transfer followed an order from Pakistan’s Supreme Court directing authorities to provide him with specialised medical care and allow an examination by qualified doctors.
According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Khan’s political party, he was taken to Shifa International Hospital for the evaluation. However, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later said the examination was conducted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, with doctors from Shifa International Hospital participating because of security concerns surrounding the hospital.
A medical team including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a physician conducted a detailed examination. Tarar said the doctors declared Khan medically fit and concluded that it was safe for him to remain in prison. He was transferred back to Adiala Jail at approximately 5 a.m. on Friday and later moved to his cell.
The brief hospital visit was closely watched because Khan’s supporters have repeatedly expressed concern about his health during his imprisonment. The former prime minister has been behind bars since 2023 in connection with several legal cases, and his party has frequently demanded independent medical assessments.

Officials said the decision was made because of the security situation created by PTI workers near the route and outside Shifa Hospital.
The clarification has added detail to the account of the overnight transfer but has not changed the main outcome: Khan was examined by a specialist medical team and returned to prison after being declared fit.
