PM Modi to Attend 15th BRICS Summit in South Africa and Make Historic Visit to Greece
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to embark on an important journey, beginning with his participation in the 15th BRICS summit in South Africa and followed by a landmark visit to Greece. The BRICS summit, consisting of the economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will mark a significant step forward as it returns to in-person meetings after several years of virtual interactions due to the global pandemic. This visit also holds special significance as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and South Africa.
BRICS Summit in South Africa:
Prime Minister Modi will commence his journey with a departure from Delhi at 7:10 AM local time. He is scheduled to arrive at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in South Africa at 1:45 PM local time. The summit’s main proceedings will unfold at the Sandton Convention Centre, with a notable event being the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue, taking place from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM local time. Following this, Prime Minister Modi will proceed to the Summer Place, where he will partake in the BRICS Leaders Retreat and a Welcome Dinner hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Significance of the Summit:
This BRICS Summit carries significant importance as it marks the first time in three years that leaders from these five influential economies are meeting face-to-face, a move made possible by the improved global situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, this year’s gathering serves as a platform to celebrate the 30-year-long diplomatic relationship between India and South Africa.
India’s Presence and Involvement:
In addition to his participation in the summit sessions, Prime Minister Modi will engage in bilateral meetings with fellow leaders present at the event. Historic Visit to Greece:
Following his engagements in South Africa, Prime Minister Modi’s journey will take him to Greece. This visit carries historic significance, as he becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the ancient nation in 40 years. His trip to Greece begins on August 25, where he will be welcomed by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece.
