On Monday, July 8, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, made a poignant appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to visit Manipur, which has been ravaged by ethnic violence, in order to offer solace to its beleaguered inhabitants.
Describing the situation in Manipur as a “tremendous tragedy,” Gandhi underscored the Congress party’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace in the state. Ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, ongoing since May of the previous year, has tragically claimed over 200 lives.
It will comfort the people. Congress is ready to support anything that would improve the situation,” the Raebareli MP expressed at a press conference held in Imphal.
During his visit to Manipur, Gandhi visited several relief camps where victims of the ethnic violence are currently housed. This marked his third visit to the state since the onset of the crisis, which began with violence on May 3 last year. Gandhi had also initiated his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ from Manipur in January 2024.
“This is the third time I have come here since the problem started. It has been a tremendous tragedy. I was expecting some improvement in the situation. But I was quite disappointed to see that the situation is still nowhere near where it should be,” he lamented.
This visit to Manipur was significant as it was Gandhi’s first since assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and following the Congress party’s victory in both Lok Sabha seats in the state.
Expressing solidarity with the affected people, Gandhi emphasized his role as a listener and a builder of confidence. I am ready to do whatever I can. The Congress party is ready to do whatever it can to bring back peace here,” he assured.
Gandhi decried the prevailing violence and polarization in Manipur, stressing that hatred and conflict would not yield solutions. “The state is completely split in two, and it is a tragedy for everybody involved. The entire state is suffering. If we start to think about peace and affection, it will be a very, very big step for Manipur,” he articulated.
The Congress leader also conveyed his readiness to assist whenever needed, stating, “Whenever the people of Manipur want, I and my party will be available.”
In discussions with Governor Anusuiya Uikey prior to the press conference, Gandhi reiterated his party’s willingness to extend support in any way possible. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the progress made thus far in addressing the crisis. “We expressed to the governor that we would like to help in whatever way we can.
During the press conference, Gandhi chose not to entertain questions from the media, asserting, “I am not ready to take questions that are designed to divert the issue.”
