Recent Developments in Manipur: Arrests Amid Ethnic Violence Overview of the Situation in Manipur

Since May 2023, Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic violence, resulting in the tragic loss of over 260 lives and displacing thousands. This ongoing turmoil has led to significant security concerns and the need for law enforcement intervention.

Recent Arrests of Outfit Cadres
On Wednesday, security forces in Manipur announced the arrests of 11 cadres from three banned outfits. Authorities reported that most of the arrests were made on Tuesday and involved individuals allegedly connected to extortion activities. The proactive measures taken by the police indicate a determination to restore order in the region affected by strife.

Seizure of Arms and Ammunition
Among the arrested were four members of the KCP (Apunba City Meitei) who were apprehended in Thoubal district, where a .32 pistol, a magazine with live rounds, and three hand grenades were recovered. Additionally, three members of the Socialist Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (SOREPA) were arrested in Imphal East district, along with an active member of the KCP (Nongdrenkhomba) from the Lamphel area in Imphal West. The seizure of these weapons underscores the seriousness of the threats posed by these unauthorized groups as the region struggles to regain normalcy.
