Veteran Odia actress Jharana Das passed away at her home on Friday, according to family sources. She was 77. Das, who received the renowned “Jaydev Puraskar” award from the state government for her lifelong contributions to the Odia cinema industry, was afflicted with an age-related condition. According to family sources, she passed away on Thursday night.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed sorrow over Jharana Das’ passing and said the renowned actress would be remembered for her work in the Odia film industry forever. Murmu tweeted, “Saddened to hear about the passing of famous Odia actress Jharana Das.” “She made an amazing contribution to the Odia cinema industry, for which she will always be known. My sincere condolences go out to her family and fans.”
Jharana Das, who was born in 1945, began her acting career in the 1960s and received numerous awards for her outstanding work in classic movies including “Shree Jagannath,” “Nari,” “Adinamegha,” “Hisabnikas,” “Pujafula,” “Amadabata,” “Abhinetri,” “Malajanha,” and “Heera Nella.”
Das had previously worked for All India Radio (AIR), Cuttack, as a young announcer and artist. She had previously worked for Doordarshan in Cuttack as an assistant station director. Many people praised her directing in the biographical film on the former chief minister of Odisha, Harekrushna Mahtab.
