AI’s ADDED MIRACLE – DECODES THE THOUGHTS OF YOUR BRAIN
SCIENTISTS FOUND A WAY TO FORM “A GIST” OF WHAT YOUR BRAIN THINKS – HALF OF THE CREDIT TO AI
On Monday i.e., 01-05-23 scientists made an announcement about their discovery of a new step towards mind reading. Brain scans and artificial intelligence modeling are used in this method to determine “the gist” of what individuals may be thinking.
This discovery is a new approach to mind reading and might help the medical field to understand and help patients who are unable to speak due to brain-related injuries. But there is always another side of the coin that shows the darker side and here it is – ‘mental privacy’.
Mind reading is something beyond what common minds can understand and it requires so much advancement to extract what someone is thinking. And it is a big thing and might be used for a bad cause and that is why people are questioning this new step.
Mental privacy might indeed be at risk but this was given an explanation by scientists; scientists stated that this language decoder will not work without the individual’s consent; it means that one cannot proceed with the step until and unless the individual cooperates with the scientist.
According to the study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, it is the first system capable of reconstructing uninterrupted language without the use of invasive brain implantation.
Three persons participated in the study, spending a total of 16 hours inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner while listening to spoken narrative stories, largely podcasts similar to the New York Times’ Modern Love.
The responses of the individual’s brain to the words and phrases of the podcast were recorded and studied by the scientists. The data of the recorded responses were fed into an AI language model, GPT-1.
The model used underwent instruction in order to predict how each person’s brain would react to perceived speech, then narrowed the alternatives until the closest reaction was identified. Each participant then listened to a fresh tale in the fMRI machine to assess the model’s precision.
It is absolutely a great step but this puts us closer to an era in which robots are “able to read minds and transcribe thought,” he said, adding that this might happen against people’s will, including while they are asleep.
These challenges were foreseen by the researchers. They conducted studies that confirmed that the decoder did not operate on a person unless it had previously undergone training on their specific neural activity.
This process was said to have taken long hours and hence scientists are working on making the process easier and faster. Let us see what changes this new long step is going to make.
