On BJP turf, Mamata Banerjee compare UP and Bengal.
In our state, we don’t evict the less fortunate. We provide them free leasehold land, according to the chief minister.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of Bengal, on Friday compared the BJP-ruled state to Bengal, where her administration is providing free leasehold property to the landless, by referencing a recent demolition drive in Uttar Pradesh that resulted in the deaths of a mother and daughter.
In our state, we don’t evict those that are in need. We provide them with free leasehold land (the landless people). Yet, a mother and her daughter were recently killed during an eviction campaign in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Mamata said to 50,000 attendees at a government benefits distribution ceremony in Bankura.
“Such offences are not punished fairly… What have become of central teams? Mamata questioned, alluding to the fact that the federal government ignores crimes in BJP-ruled states while dispatching ED, CBI, and I-T teams to non-BJP states.
In rural Kanpur on February 13, during the demolition of their cottage that was reportedly built on government land, Pramila Dixit, 54, and her daughter Shiva, 22, perished from burns. The residence was allegedly set on fire while the two residents were asleep, according to a complaint made by the family.
UP police initially asserted that the ladies lit themselves on fire, but they later charged 39 persons, including government officials, with murder.
According to a source, Mamata opted to bring up the tragedy in Uttar Pradesh in Bankura because the region has predominantly supported the BJP since 2019. The BJP won eight out of 12 Assembly seats in Bankura in 2021 and both Lok Sabha seats there in 2019.
According to the source, “it was part of her attempt to demonstrate the brutality of BJP governments in other states and her government’s pro-poor policies.”
Mamata has been giving out free leasehold land to the homeless for the past few years since she is against forced land acquisition and the displacement of individuals from public land on moral grounds. The Bengali government grants pattas (leases) to those who want to construct homes, farm, or live in the forest in three different categories.
In 2021, after assuming office for the third time in a row, she concentrated on granting all Bengali landless people leasehold land rights. To provide land pieces on lease to residents of the approximately 300 refugee colonies in Bengal, her government has passed a measure.
A Trinamul leader in Bankura reported that the government has granted leasehold land rights to about 3,000 residents in Bankura on Friday.
“BJP only visits during election times to solicit your votes. In Bankura, there are two MPs. The BJP is the party represented by the majority of MLAs. What have they accomplished for the citizens of Bankura? They didn’t complete even one piece of developmental work for the district. Before getting into how the Narendra Modi administration is supposedly depriving Bengal, Mamata compared them (the BJP) to a cuckoo that lays its eggs in a crow’s nest and raises babies that eventually depart.
The threat of Maoist militants once prevented residents of Bankura and neighbouring Jungle Mahal districts from leaving their homes. In the past 11 years, there hasn’t been a single Maoist attack, so observe the change, Mamata continued.
The Center, according to Mamata, withheld scholarships for OBC students.
“The cause is fairly obvious. For the minority group, there was a 17% reservation (in OBC), and almost 97% of Muslim students fell under this category. They put an end to it entirely. To provide scholarships to OBC students, we established Medha-shree, stated Mamata.
The Assembly on Friday approved a resolution upholding a long-standing tribe demand that the Sari and Sarna be recognized as religious codes in the census. While not objecting, the BJP questioned why the state government was bringing the resolution up before the rural elections.
