“PM Modi Inaugurates Eco-friendly Terminal at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Boosting Connectivity and Tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands”
In a landmark virtual inauguration on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the state-of-the-art integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, Andaman, and Nicobar Islands. This monumental development comes as a response to the surging passenger traffic, and its striking design, shaped like a shell, harmoniously blends with the natural surroundings of the pristine islands.
Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also graced the occasion, paying homage to the visionary freedom fighter VD Savarkar by unveiling his statue on the airport premises. As the nation looks forward to a brighter future, the new terminal is a symbol of progress and connectivity for the region.
The PMO disclosed that the project was executed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at an estimated cost of ₹707.73 crore. The ambitious endeavour has increased the airport’s capacity to accommodate 11,000 tourists, up from the previous 4,000. Furthermore, the new terminal facilitates the parking of 10 aircraft simultaneously, ensuring smoother travel experiences and enhanced logistics.
One of the notable features of the terminal is its commitment to sustainability, as the entire building is designed to harness natural lighting for 12 hours daily through strategically positioned skylights on the roof. The emphasis on eco-friendliness and energy efficiency reflects the government’s dedication to preserving the unique and delicate environment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In his address, PM Modi highlighted the positive impact the new terminal will have on the region’s economy. Increased connectivity and tourist footfall are expected to generate more employment opportunities, contributing to the overall growth and development of the area. The Prime Minister emphasized that the airport’s modernization aligns with the government’s vision of fostering Ease of Travel and Ease of Doing Business, ensuring that the islands become more accessible to both domestic and international travellers.
The inauguration also became an opportunity for PM Modi to reflect on the government’s accomplishments over the past nine years. He praised the administration for rectifying the mistakes of the past with sensitivity while implementing innovative approaches to governance. He remarked that the previous focus on development in major cities had neglected tribal and island regions, but the present government has been committed to bridging this gap, leading to more equitable progress across the nation.
The terminal building itself is an architectural marvel with a total built-up area of 40,837 sq. meters, designed to cater to the needs of approximately 1,200 passengers during peak hours and an annual capacity of around 40 lakh passengers. The facility boasts 28 check-in counters, three passenger boarding bridges, and four conveyor belts, ensuring seamless passenger flow and a pleasant travel experience.
As the new terminal opens its doors to travellers from far and wide, it represents a testament to the government’s dedication to fostering regional development and promoting tourism in lesser-explored parts of India. The Veer Savarkar International Airport is now poised to become a pivotal gateway to the pristine beauty and cultural heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The nation eagerly awaits the manifold benefits this modern aviation hub will bring to the region and its people.
